Three Las Vegas residents have been arrested after an elderly man was supposedly taken on a “joyride” from Las Vegas to Pahrump and back. A 29-year-old man faces charges of kidnapping and grand larceny after the alleged theft of a vehicle. The two women also involved in the incident face charges being under the influence of a controlled substance, and the mother also faces charges of child neglect..
According to a news release from the Nye County Sheriff, the office received a call from two women who had driven from Las Vegas to Pahrump. They had been traveling with their elderly friend, an 82-year-old man, and the 7-year-old son of one of the women. These women — a 46-year-old mother and a 50-year-old woman — reportedly phoned police and claimed that their car had been stolen. They had stopped for gas and exited the car when a 29-year-old man they had apparently just met in Las Vegas took off in the car with the elderly man still inside. Investigators say it was clear both women were under the influence of narcotics.
Officers located the elderly man at a Siegel Suites motel in Las Vegas. Other than apparent diminished mental capacity, he seemed to be otherwise uninjured. He was taken to UMC hospital for full evaluation, after which he was released into protective custody of Elder Protective Services.
The allegedly stolen vehicle was discovered by investigators near downtown Las Vegas. The 29-year-old man accused of the theft was booked at Clark County Detention Center in Nevada and faces charges related to the theft of the car and the kidnapping of the elderly man. He is awaiting removal to Nye County.
The report simply states “it was clear” the women were under the influence of narcotics but makes no mention of any drug tests being performed to make that determination. Regardless, defense attorneys may be able to negotiate a plea bargain, as the women were the ones who called the police out of concern over the stolen car with the elderly gentleman in it. Nevada defense counsel may wish to get a better sense of the full situation in regard to the alleged kidnapping as well as the other charges — including larceny — the man is expected to face.
